Armita Geravand (Persian: آرمیتا گراوند) was an Iranian girl who fell into a coma in the Tehran subway on October 1, 2023, at the age of 17. She was held in the intensive care unit of an army hospital, where she was declared brain dead on October 22, 2023. This incident was compared to the death of Mahsa Amini and described as “unbearable” by the German foreign minister.

In Iran, women are legally required to cover their hair and wear loose-fitting clothing as part of the strict Islamic dress code. Anyone who violates these rules must expect public reprimands, fines or arrests by the Islamic religious police, also known as the moral police. In September 2022, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in moral police custody after being arrested for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly. Aminis death sparked nationwide protests in Iran that became known as the "Mahsa Movement." In response, the regime cracked down on activists and tightened hijab laws.

On October 1, 2023, 16-year-old Armita Geravand was seen entering the Tehran subway with two friends. She was later dragged unconscious from a train and taken to a hospital. According to the Norway-based human rights group Hengaw and her two friends, Geravand was confronted by moral police officers for not wearing a headscarf. After a brief argument, she was attacked and fell, hitting her head and losing consciousness. She was hospitalized with “severe brain injuries.” Iranian authorities have denied there was a physical altercation and said she fainted because of low blood pressure.
Surveillance camera footage from the subway station shows Geravand entering the train with two other girls without headscarves. A few moments later, her friends carry her unconscious from the train. Irans state media claims that these recordings support their account but do not show the events in the train car that led to Geravands coma.

The hospital where Geravand was taken was surrounded by security forces who reportedly threatened her family and friends. A journalist who attempted to investigate Geravands condition was briefly arrested. The Iranian government has rejected international criticism, calling it “interventionist.” Officials claim Geravand simply passed out and accidentally injured himself.
On October 22, Iranian state media announced that Geravand was declared brain dead after several weeks in a coma. The case has drawn international criticism and calls for an independent investigation into the cause of her condition.
