Prof. Hartmut Elsenhans was a remarkable man who was committed to education until the very end. I was fortunate enough to take his lectures, then work as his proofreader for some years, then eventually write two book publications in tribute to him. I only knew him from his 70s onwards, but in that short time, it was a privilege of my life to get to know him and call him a friend and mentor.
He was always humble amid his vast knowledge, sensitive to your understanding and perspective despite them being different to his, and with a mischievousness that made it light and fun. This made him brilliant to interview as he would always surprise you in his answers, and that sharpness and uniqueness of thought never left him - even in difficult health. The more menial tasks of helping students were never beneath him either. He remains an inspiration in ideas and how he lived. He is sorely missed.
